I'm not calling you a bad person. You probably care deeply. You probably have a vision board somewhere with the words "Academic Excellence" written in a font that cost you ₦15,000.

But here's the thing nobody wants to say at the PTA meeting:

The first: examination papers typed by the same teachers who taught the content, which then — somehow, mysteriously, in the way harmattan finds its way under every door — reach students before exam day. Results come out. Everyone claps. The school posts the scores on Instagram. Parents forward it on WhatsApp with three fire emojis.

The second — and this one is even more brazen — teachers who sit with students days before the exam and review the questions. Not the topics. Not the themes. The actual questions. Dressed up as "revision." Packaged as "preparation." It is neither. It is the answer key, delivered in slow motion, with deniability built in.

And the child? The child has learned one lesson more efficiently than any other subject on the timetable: that outcomes can be arranged.

That is not education. That is rehearsal. And rehearsal produces performers, not thinkers.


Now here is where it gets interesting.

The problem is not that your teachers are evil. Most of them aren't. The problem is that your system was never designed to produce truth. It was designed to produce comfort. And comfort, my friend, is the sworn enemy of growth.

You cannot diagnose a patient accurately if the thermometer is programmed to always read 37 degrees. Doesn't matter how qualified the doctor. Doesn't matter how expensive the hospital. The instrument is lying — and so everything built on its reading is built on sand.

A compromised assessment system does exactly that to a school. It makes everything downstream — the grades, the promotions, the confidence, the certificates — structurally unreliable. You don't know which students genuinely understood. You don't know which teachers actually taught. You don't know where the gaps are. You are, in the most literal sense, flying blind — with a smile on your face and a results sheet in your hand.

What Does an Honest School Actually Look Like?

It starts with a curriculum built around a destination. Not "cover chapter seven before end of term." A real destination: what should a child who sat in your classroom for a full year be able to do that they couldn't do before? Think. Analyse. Apply. Not just content — capacity.

Then it invests in the teachers delivering that curriculum. Because a brilliant scheme of work in the hands of an under-equipped teacher is like handing someone a Ferrari with no driving lessons. Impressive machine. Dangerous outcome. Great pedagogy isn't a bonus feature — it is the engine.

And then — this is where the serious schools separate themselves from the performing ones — it tests honestly.

Papers built from the actual schemes of work. Developed entirely independently. Never seen by any teacher, any administrator, any proprietor, any aunty in the bursar's office, nobody — before students open them on assessment day. Sealed. Blind. No pre-exam "review sessions." No helpful hints. No arranged outcomes.

The score a child earns under those conditions is data. Real, honest, usable data. It tells you what your school actually achieved. It tells the child what they genuinely know. It tells parents what their school fees are actually buying.

Every massaged result, every leaked paper, every "revision class" that is really an answer session in disguise — is just theatre.


The schools that will matter in ten years are not the ones with the prettiest prospectus. They are the ones brave enough to look at themselves honestly and build accordingly.
